Silicosis is not related to asbestos exposure, but to silica exposure. The only known treatment for silicosis is lung transplantation. Individuals may not show symptoms of silicosis for 20-30 years after exposure. There are two types of silicosis, simple silicosis and
conglomerate silicosis.
Simple silicosis is less serious, and may produce symptoms such as coughing and phlegm production. Comglomerate silicosis is more serious, and will produce more serious symptoms such as shortness of breath, phlegm, and coughing. In later stages shortness of breath may become dehabilitating.
Exposed workers should be tested regularly for silicosis. Sandblaster's will need chest x-ray every 6 months. Other worker's in silica related occupations should be tested every 2-5 years.
