Asbestos has been around for centuries. It was discovered long ago that asbestos resists fire, and is good for insulating. Ancient greeks and romans were known to use asbestos. There is even evidence that ancient discoveries were made related to asbestos related health risks. Later the hazards were ignored as asbestos products began to become more popular. Today it is still used for roofing tile, sound proof material, and heating pipe and related covering.
In the U.S. asbestos hit it's popularity in the 1900's during the industrial revolution. It began to be reported that deaths were unnaturally high in mining towns throughout the country. Many workers were found to parish uncharacteristically young. Investigation was launched testing asbestos exposure and it's effects on the body. It was later discovered that not only did many asbestos producing companies know about the health hazards of asbestos mining, but that these same companies also took steps to prevent their employees from being educated about precautions to take, and the health risks associated with asbestos inhalation. Asbestos is still not banned, but has strict regulations for it's use and handling. It is however still in production worldwide, and unregulated.
