Newer homes are unlikely to have asbestos products in them. However many homes build from 1920 to 1970 may contain some products. Here are some things to look for:
Resilient Floor Tiles
Automobile Brake Pads and Linings
Vinyl Sheet Flooring
Floor Adhesives
Cement Sheet, Millboard, and Paper
Door Gaskets
Steam Pipes, Boilers, and Furnace Ducts
Soundproofing or Decorative Material
Patching and Joint Compounds
Textured Paint
Artificial Ashes and Embers
Fireproof Gloves, Stove-Top Pads
Ironing Board Covers, Hairdryers
Clutch Facings and Gaskets
Asbestos Cement Roofing, Shingles, Siding
Remember when inspecting these areas, look for water stains, abrasive surfaces, tearing, or cracking. It is important not to try and handle a suspected problem yourself. Contact your local health department for information about hiring professionals qualified to handle the asbestos.
